Once you purchase a licence for the hard copy of the Java programs, there are no ongoing fees. JAVAconnects, our online groups, are subscription-based at $100.00 per month to facilitate 5 groups weekly.

The group members can change over time. Typically, most organizations find it does end up being the same group of participants (more or less), but you can also welcome new members. Holding the Java programs consistently on a weekly basis, however, is a priority. That way participants know that it is held every week and can look forward to it. Doing the programs every other week or once a month is not ideal.

Yes, but please be careful to keep the focus on peer support and sharing. One thing to avoid is turning the groups into singalongs. While the music part of the Java programs is wonderful, the intent is for residents to have time to share what is going on for them, thereby reducing loneliness and increasing a sense of belonging.

The group sizes vary depending on the functioning levels of the group members. Groups anywhere from 8-12 people works for higher functioning and smaller groups of 4-6 are more ideal for people with advanced dementia. You can do one-to-ones using the Java materials but research tells us that inviting those you visit to attend the groups is the most effective approach to reducing loneliness and social isolation.

Mornings tend to be the best time or afternoons around 3:00-3:30 (after nap time). Avoid right after lunch if possible. Early evenings are also good.
