United Way and Java Group Programs recently embarked on a pilot to address loneliness in 10 agencies serving seniors across British Columbia, Canada. United Way provided agencies a grant to start up a program called Java Social. Java Social is a gathering of people who meet weekly in a peer support environment.
“Watching the participants connect with each other and build such meaningful social relationships has been nothing short of inspiring! While I am involved in organizing and leading numerous senior programs at Kits House, I can say without hesitation that this one has become my absolute favorite.” Kitsilano Neighbourhood House (Vancouver, BC)
The participants share with one another, building friendships, camaraderie and joy. Through peer support, sharing and outreach, the goal is to help isolated seniors meet their neighbours for meaningful social engagement and connection.
Outcomes
“Our local health centre, community services, and mental health are collaborating to address seniors’ isolation and complex needs. Part of this includes “social prescribing” by doctors and support professionals. Java Social is an activity they can connect patients to who have few social supports/network.” Keremeos-Lower Similkameen Community Service (Keremeos, BC)
Over 7 months, the agencies conducted 203 sessions with 129 seniors participating. 95% of the participants who responded to a survey said they felt more socially connected. Training was provided online and support for the facilitators to get the program going. 100% of the facilitators said they enjoyed the program and would recommend it to others.
“What has stood out for me with Java Social is the overall resiliency and willingness to share lived experiences by the participants. This program built a sense of community in our group.” Nanaimo Family Life Association
100% of group members who responded to the survey question recommended the program for others.
“Different than anything else I have participated in. I have made friends within the group. My neighbour has joined too.” Java Social participant
“I love this group. I talk more on Mondays that the rest of the week. I attend another program now as well.” Java Social participant
