Java Music Club helps to improve quality of life

The Ontario Research Institute for Aging’s 2-Year Progress Report (2011-2012) is now available on their website. The report profiles the Schlegel Research Chairs, provides highlights of research projects and also research-to-practice activities, including the implementation of the Java Music Club. Dr. John Hirdes and his team at interRAI Canada at the University of Waterloo have developed a questionaire that can accurately measure a number of indicators associated with Quality of Life. In order to improve on this measure, the RIA in partnership with Schlegel Villages and the Ontario Association of Residents Councils began trialling the “Java Music Club”, the evidence-based mutual support program that provides a safe environment for residents to discuss a wide range of topics. Using music, photos and a ‘talking stick’, residents are able to engage in meaningful discussions and feel supported by their peers. Read more
